General Info:

General Info: Valeriana officinalis is a plant, commonly referred to as valerian. Valerian roots are brewed for tea or eaten for relaxation and sedation purposes. It has been used over the years as a nervine,  as a sedative in hysteria and epilepsy and also as a sedative in nervous anxiety. Uses also extent to aromatic stimulant, low- grade fevers and even aphrodisiac.  It has been known to grow well in regions of Europe, parts of Asia and North America. Today, the ethnopharmacological uses of Valeriana, and the recent advances on the phytochemical and pharmacological study of Valeriana officinalis seem to promote its use.

Melatonin or 5 methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine is a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain and it is well known for causing and regulating sleep. Melatonin is present but can also be synthesized in the enterochromaffin cells. The release of gastrointestinal melatonin into the circulation seems to follow the periodicity of food intake, particularly tryptophan intake. It is noteworthy that the concentration of melatonin in the gastrointestinal tract surpasses blood levels by 10-100 times and there is at least 400 times more melatonin in the gastrointestinal tract than in the pineal gland. Melatonin in the gastrointestinal tract of newborn and infant mammals is of maternal origin given that melatonin penetrates easily the placenta and is after secreted into the mother’s milk.

Nutritional Info: Melatonin is mainly synthesized by the pinealocytes from the amino acid tryptophan.

No recommended dietary allowance (RDA) has been established for melatonin. When it comes to melatonin supplements, some experts recommend a dosage of around 0.5 grams to 3 grams for sleep-related issues. Higher doses may cause daytime drowsiness.

Examples of foods that can increase  your melatonin are:

Tart, Cherries, Goji, Berries, Eggs, Milk, Fish, Nuts

Clinical Advice:

Pharmaceutical Advice: As always, our decisions should be based on evidence. Like all the supplements, Valetonina should not replace an approved medication for the indication of anxiety or insomnia. Also, improving your understanding around sleep supplements and cirdadian physiology through internet, should not replace your GPs expert opinion. Personally, i like Valetonina and i use it some months of the year. Research is "solid enough" regarding these two supplements and their mechanism of action. Melatonin and blue light correlation seems to solidify as a concept indicating its external supplementation as a solution.

You can easily feel the action of the specific substance based on my personal experience and also from my patients statements. Keep in mind that even though most people feel sleepy, some can have an eye irritation. This is because melatonin might work by creating photophobia. If you start these supplements, it's important to also adhere to a healthy way of sleep, away from screens and sounds and also away from very warm temperatures.

About Valeriana officinalis which is less solid as a supplement even though it is traditionally used to many civilisation, they key concept is circadian rhythm. Many papers fail to see its action since they are searching for an immediate sleep promoter. Valeriana works mostly by correcting your circadian cycle. Therefore, to most people it has a mild sedative effect, but it is very helpful for night shift workers or people that are used to stay awake late at night without any reason. I happen to work next to a factory and i have many patients who state its beneficial effect. The results are not fast though . You need to take valeriana every day in order for your circadian rhythm to be regulated.

Overall, it's safe enough supplement and a good brand. I hope it works also for you and make your life better.
